FAQs

Why is ezehay better than a traditional haynet or haybag?

Anyone with a horse knows how frustrating it can be to fill a traditional haynet—it’s awkward, time-consuming, and involves heavy lifting. ezehay makes the entire process fast, easy, and efficient. With no need for awkward bending or fiddling with ropes, you'll save valuable time and effort every day. Plus, it keeps the hay off the ground, reducing waste and saving you money.

How do I care for my ezehay?

Your ezehay feeder requires minimal maintenance to stay in top shape. Simply keep the moving parts clear of excess debris and check the bolts and fixings regularly to ensure everything stays secure. With this basic upkeep, ezehay will provide you with years of reliable service.

As with any haynet, the ezehay net may need replacing from time to time depending on wear and your horse’s feeding habits. Replacement nets are always available at ezehay.com.

Which net should I choose?

We offer two sizes of knotless mesh single-layer nets to suit your horse's feeding needs:

  • Slow Feed Net (25mm / 2.5cm mesh):
This smaller mesh size holds approximately 13.5kg of dry hay and is perfect for horses that need restricted hay intake or benefit from slower feeding. It’s ideal for keeping your horse occupied for longer periods, such as overnight, without overfeeding.

Using a slow feeder net for your horse, like our ezehay slow feeder can be beneficial to your horses’ physical and mental health. As you are aiming to slow down the time it takes your horse to eat their hay, this aids in reducing obesity, colic, and insulin resistance, and promotes constant chewing, reducing the risk of stomach ulcers. As you are slowing down their eating, you are reducing the chance of choke. As they spend less time without any hay, it can help to avoid unwanted behaviours such as weaving and cribbing.

Please remember to introduce your horse to slow feeding nets gradually.
Every horse is different and how they respond to a slow feeder net varies. If they are used to using a haynet but you would like to introduce them to a slow feeder, remember some will take a little longer to learn how to eat from this smaller net and others can adapt instantly. If you feel they are struggling to eat from it initially, feed some hay in a larger net and some in a slow feeder so you are ensuring they are eating some hay, while they get used to using the slower feed nets.

  • Standard Feed Net (35mm / 3.5cm mesh):
This larger mesh holds the same amount of hay—13.5kg—but allows for medium feeding rate. It’s perfect for horses that need a larger quantity of hay without the need to slow them down significantly.

Both net options are designed to slow down your horse’s eating, ensuring their hay lasts longer and they aren't left without food for extended periods. You can buy replacement nets here

How do I install my ezehay?

Installing your ezehay is quick and simple! The unit comes with clear instructions for easy setup. It can be mounted on most stable walls or fencing, and once in place, it's ready to go! If you're unsure about the best location for your ezehay, we recommend positioning it at a height that’s comfortable for your horse to access while ensuring the haynet doesn't drag on the ground, and at a comfortable height for filling. Is ezehay safe for my horse?

Absolutely! ezehay is designed with your horse’s safety and comfort in mind. The feeder frame is made from durable, smooth-edged galvanised steel and stainless steel components, so there are no sharp edges or rough spots. The net is crafted from soft, knotless mesh that’s gentle on your horse’s mouth, reducing the risk of dental issues traditional knotted haynets can cause. Plus, by keeping hay off the ground, ezehay helps prevent contamination, ensuring your horse has access to clean, fresh hay. Rest assured, ezehay is built to be both safe and reliable for daily use.

How much hay should I feed my horse?

Most guidance advises total daily intake should not be restricted to less than 1.5% of current bodyweight (dry matter) which equates to approximately 9kg of hay, for a 500kg horse without access to grazing. ezehay will hold up to 13.5kg of hay meaning if your horse is larger and requires more hay, or you possibly leave your horse for longer than 12 hours, you would normally need 2 traditional haynets, but would get up to 13.5kg in your ezehay feeder.

Can I put soaked hay in my ezehay?

Yes you can! As you know, soaked hay in heavier than dry hay but with ezehay you can put your soaked hay in slice by slice, avoiding the heavy lifting.

Can my ezehay weigh my hay?

If you’d like to get an approximate weight of the hay in your ezehay feeder, follow these simple steps. Using a spring balance or a digital suitcase scale will make this process easy and quick.

Steps to Weigh Your Hay:

  1. Set Up Your Scale
Use a spring balance or a digital scale, like the ones used to weigh luggage.

  2. Fill the ezehay Feeder
Fill your ezehay feeder with the amount of hay you want to measure.

  3. Attach the Scale
Hook the scale under the centre of the front bar of your ezehay feeder.

  4. Take the Reading
Gently lift the scale until it just takes the weight of the hay and hoop. Keep the bar as horizontal as possible while you take the reading, in kilos.

  5. Calculate the Hay Weight

    • Subtract 2.55 from your reading (this accounts for the feeder’s weight).

    • Multiply the result by 2 to get the weight of the hay in your ezehay feeder.

    Formula:
    (Your reading - 2.55) x 2 = Weight of hay in kilos

Example:

If your reading is 7.0 kilos:

  • 7.0 - 2.55 = 4.45

  • 4.45 x 2 = 8.9 kg of hay

This method provides a useful estimate of the hay weight. Keep in mind that hay weight can vary based on factors like hay quality and moisture content. On average, your ezehay feeder will hold about 13.5 kg, or approximately 2/3 of a standard UK hay bale.
